Reader's Digest "Classic Cars" by High Speed
By Dave Weber and Kimmo Sahakangas/ Images by Kimmo Sahakangas

Although Reader's Digest (RD) issued diecast in previous years, we first became aware of this new series of model cars in the spring of 2002. An example of a 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air was offered on eBay. No description other than 1:64 scale and "Reader's Digest" was provided. With further developments, Dave found that this was part of a RD promotional program.

Dave made contact with RD Customers Service. We learned that this model and others were available as premiums. Presently they are included free of charge in the Condensed Book subscription program. But they are also available to the consumer and collector for $8.95 each not including shipping and handling charges.

HF-438 1964 Ford Mustang

HF-440 1963 Ford Thunderbird

The series is made of the following:

HF-438 1964 Ford Mustang
HF-439 1957 Chevrolet Corvette
HF-440 1963 Ford Thunderbird
HF-441 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air
HF-442 1969 442 Oldsmobile
HF-443 1956 Ford F-100 Truck
HF-444 Cadillac 1953 Eldorado
HF-445 1969 Camaro

These models have rubber tires but feature no other moving parts. The detailing is amazing and these replicas are excellent representations of their full-size counterparts. Baseplates identify the models are made in China and "High Speed". The packaging state "Made by High Speed Metal & Plastic Products Mfg Co LTD." Not much information is known about this firm. They are believed to be located in Hong Kong. High Speed models have been produced for at least twenty years albeit in lesser quality. There are antique cars and pullback sport cars to name a few. Production in the early days was in Hong Kong and Macau. Majorette even issued High Speed castings in a "Mini Motor" pullback series in the early 1980s.

RD has been providing products from this firm for over the past ten years. Their oldest known models were in an "Antique Car" set and consisted of six fairly nondescript little toy-like cars that are similar to those made in the 1980s. This issue was followed over the years with other old cars, antique fire engines, antique trucks and some railroad models, to name a few.

Our hats are off to High Speed for these quality "Classic Cars" models and we hope more will appear in time. We also appreciate the continuous efforts of RD to provide these models to not only the general public but to our collector community as well. RD we thank you!
