A Break from the Past - New Wagons in Small-Scale
by Doug Breithaupt

Call it what you will, the wagon is making a comeback. In the world of real cars, wagons are popular once again. In the world of toy cars, we are beginning to see more new wagons as well. What follows is a comparison of five automotive marques who have offered wagons in the past and continue to do so now. Do you prefer the older or newer wagons?

Audi 100 Avant - Siku
Audi 100 Avant - This great Siku model features an opening rear hatch. This stylish wagon was offered from 1984-1988.
Audi A4 Avant - Norev is the most surprising and welcome diecast producer of 2003 and their new A4 Avant is a delight. The rear hatch opens and the chrome wheels are especially handsome.

Citroen CX Break - Matchbox
Citroen CX Break - This model represents what made Matchbox great, realistic cars in correct colors. The opening rear hatch is plastic. An ambulance was also done.
Citroen Xsara Picasso - Is it a wagon or mini-van. It is based on the Xsara and also has an opening rear-hatch. Citroen still offers unique body styles as the Picasso clearly shows. Norev did this fine model.

Mercury Commuter - Matchbox
Mercury Commuter - This is a favorite Matchbox, offered with regular wheels and two dogs in the back. The color is very 1970's and this is a classic American wagon.
Mercury Sable Wagon - While this Matchbox dates to 1989, the Sable wagon is still offered today. The tail-gate lifts up and the colors are quite nice.

VW Passat Variant GT - Siku
VW Passat Variant GT - Another fine Siku wagon, this one was first offered in 1989. The rear hatch opens and fits perfectly on this model.
VW Touareg - Maisto is the first to offer the Touareg and it is quite good. Some might call it a mini-SUV but the dimensions are more wagon-like.

Volvo 245 DL - Majorette
Volvo 245 DL - Majorette's classic Volvo wagon is another favorite. The lines are perfect and the mustard color is quite realistic for the period.
Volvo V40 2.0 16V - Volvos are not square anymore and Siku has done an excellent model of the current Volvo wagon. It has the trade-mark opening rear hatch.
