Road and Track
"Race on Sunday, Sell on Monday"

By Doug Breithaupt

Auto manufacturers have always understood that success in motor sports sells cars. Toy car manufacturers have been happy to produce both stock and racing versions of popular automobiles. The 1970 Plymouth Superbird from Johnny Lightning's MOPAR series was recently added to my collection and I could not resist matching it up with the NASCAR Superbird also produced by JL. Unlike many toy car makers, JL actually did two separate castings instead of simply adding paint and tampos. After enjoying the road and track contrast, I wondered how many more sets I could assemble? After setting parameters that the road car must be the same basic color as the race car, which must represent an authentic, race vehicle, the search turned up an even dozen. If you can add some more, let me know (guest book).
